I've recently learned of iconoclasm in reading a history of the Byzantine Empire. I know there are a lot of Christians on /lit/, so I wanna ask you guys your opinions on the subject.

The iconodules of the time seemed pretty extreme in their love of images, what with shit like taking paint flakes from paintings of saints and sprinkling it on food and drink, it really did seem like a matter of idol worship.

I'm inclined to symphatize with the iconoclasts if that sort of thing really was happening at the time. That and a few of the other examples I've read show that the people, instead of merely praying to God, or the saints, believed that the representations themselves had power, and that really doesn't sit well with me. I get having an image, I know Catholics will kiss them and that doesn't weird me out in anyway. But the extreme veneration that ancient Catholics had for images seems to me somewhat disrespectful to the actual personages those images represented.
