Memetic industry comes in phases, crests and troughs. Pepe and wojak seem to have a life of their own, although the obsession with pepe is unheard of. Nearly every single board has at least 2-3 cartoon frogs in the OP at any given time. Confirm it for yourself right now if you want.

I wonder what theoretically explains the darwinian success of pepe as a meme. Pepe has thousands of variations and seems to have reached a kind of inflection point of memetic immortality. Pepe will keep spreading until the entire internet is nothing but frogs.

What explains it? I hypothesize that pepe is a good "default" posting option. It's popular because it is popular (network effect). And it benefits from productive feedback loops. Because there are so many pepes in various iterations, there's one for every sentiment or mood.

Pepe's iconic smug expression also encapsulates the unjustified self-satisfaction of your typical online troll.

Feels guy is more limited. Although he has a healthy set of niches too. From the classic dejected wojak, to the flourishing basedjack, to the healthy pink-faced biz related wojak. You have twinkjaks and gurljaks. It just can't stand up to pepe.

>the author uses a now-antiquated term that I'm not familiar with, which is clearly being used in reference to the racial characteristics of one of the characters

What are other methods for reading older books through a post-colonial and thoroughly anti-imperialist lens?
