There is an article by Bloom where he gives some arguments why Kafka is gnostic writer. After I read that article I re-read The trial. So here are my comments on it.

Josef K is an uninitiated person he does not know the "laws". He does not why he is being. During his conversation with Fräulein Bürnster he says "I don't even know myself".

The archons are the judicial system, when he is with Elsa (if I recall correctly) he stares at a panting, then there is a small piece of dialog "the higher judges stay in hiding ... but yet he's sitting on a throne. .. that's all an invention ".

The figure of the demiurge permeates the whole book, yet it never shows up. However, there are some images throughouth the text depicting a dim light emanating during important moments, this light is followed by mockery scenes.

Sophia is represented by the women in the book mainly: Fräulein Bürnster, the Usher's wife, Leni the nurse. These all are emmanations of Sophia. Even though they seem to mislead K, I think overall they help him by telling him how the inside of the court proccedings work.

These lead finally to Titorelli which I think he's a trickster-like figure. I don't really know how this would enter into a gnostic interpretation but here it is in case anyone can help with it.

Hey /lit/, I've recently gotten really into Kafka, and tore through all his stories and books. Are there any other authors out there quite like him? Obviously loads of people were influenced by Kafka, but most of them seem to take up the existential/beaurocratic angle of his work and totally lack the absurd humor and humanity. Any books that will make me laugh and cry at the same time, like Kafka does? Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is the only thing I've read lately that comes close.

this cover is greatly marred by the rest of the collection (that overplays the eye concept), but still as a standalone is pretty good looking.

haven't been able to find a copy nline though.
