Why are literature scholars such hacks?

From Dorothy L. Sayers' analysis of Dante's Inferno:

From Schmoop's analysis of Blake's Auguries of Innocence:

It's like they're actively competing to write the most unintelligible analysis while throwing in a bunch of quotes from unrelated sources. This is the case from the unknown to the most renowned academics.
