You have to wade through some snuff scenes (that make sense within the context of the book), but its overall pretty enjoyable and interesting

Check out the metamorphosis of prime intellect. I read it back in highschool and at the time it was freely available online. Interesting piece, more novella than novel. The AI refuses to let people die so humans create death cults where they make a sport out of physical trauma iirc. I found it interesting when I read it.
