How do I Bukowski?

My exposure to him is limited to the foreword he wrote for John Fante's "Ask the Dust" and a mention that he was a jerk in some Nick Cave song.

So there I was in my old friend Josh’s room. We’re passing around the hookah, passing around the old bong. I had a bottle of Captain by my side. I was drunk, and I was feeling drunk.
“Hemingway wrote drunk! I will, too!” This is what I thought to myself.
“Let’s break it down, fuck that shit.” Everything I heard was just a combination of those words. That’s what I heard, yes sir. “Physics man, it’s gonna work.” It’s always gonna work. You bastard.
What will we do when we do. I am here, I am waiting for the left side of the earth to turn. “Shhhhh, be quiet! God damn!” There are some serious problems going on here. “Can you bring guns into dorms?” What the cunt kind of question is that. God damn, I don’t know.
Hey, I know, let me spill beer all over my torso. Fuck everything! Yes, of course, that is my mission. To fuck everything. If it moves, fuck it. I really don’t give a fuck, unless you want one, of course. If it breathes and heaves, you can fuck it, god damn it. Yes sir, that’s the kind of fucks I give.
“Don’t you want to know what I’m writing right now?” You illiterate bastards, I’ll write you something. Talking of your drinking of honey for foreign exchange students. I’ll fuck you! Fucking god damn it.

I tried my hand at "stream of consciousness" writing. Here's a poem. Please tell me if it's horrible and I should never try to write something like this ever again.


You are a bird
And I am a pilot
I fly my plane
You flap your wings
I feel blind to your worries
And you can’t conceive mine
These windows need to be cleaned

Where do I start with Bukowski? All I know of by him is Nirvana, and it really blew my mind (thanks Tom Waits).

My face when your bookstore had 17 different poetry books by Bukowski and only 2 by Ted Hughes.

I've been getting more and more interested in reading Charles Bukowski for a long time, but never knew where to start.

Any recommendations?
