I met a group of southerners in my country (poland) many years ago. They were different than what I expected. I was always told they were very racist and religious but these men were, I don't know how to describe, had an almost manic dionysian attitude. I never saw people drink as much as them before and still retain lucidity. I talked to them and they said they were from kentucky and were very friendly, despite being loud and (i think) unintentionally obnoxious. I asked one with a big nose if he had jewish ancestry and he said

>i said "your american, not scottish, why are you proud of it?"

to this day it still makes me laugh. I've met americans from the north and west but none of them were quite as hearty as those southerners i met. And the west and northerners honestly seemed more aloof and rude than them. Those southerners were overly polite, always thanking people and holding doors open for others. It almost came across as creepy at first.
