In general I like having maps, the problem starts when the writer has no sense of scale.

The two problems I see most often.

1. The writer has a location that is treated as exotic to most of the characters but the map obviously shows that it isn't really all that far.

2. Distances shown as being very long are crossed very quickly (you don't really need a map to have this problem but it just makes it more glaring)
