I am going to read this. I saw Lynch's film and I have no intentions of seeing whatshisname's incoming edition.

What I ask of you is to advise me on which edition to take, strictly in terms of the book. I'd like to have a nice cover and print and all that. Since I cannot check the book in a bookshop, and that they don't have options around here, I need to order it online.

Thanks in advance.

I had a really hard time finding out last time if this was any good. I want to find out before it's inevitably tainted by people looking to be contrarian after the movie comes out.

So I found a mass market paperback copy of Dune for free but it's ~900 pages, when I read it as a kid it had the exact same cover art but it was probably ~400 pages. Are these different versions?
Are there any Dune experts on /lit/?

Just started Dune, should I be looking up these terms to better understand the story, or will they eventually be explained?

Gents, figured I spent too much time on vidya and should read more. Only books that were ever really able to capture me were the dune series(dune and messiah). Interesting topics were philosophy, society, religion and science. Recommended list was no succes, What´d you suggest /lit/?

First, I just have to say, "WOW!" This book was amazing! It's no wonder it's heralded as one of the greatest science fiction books made.

The detail that went into creating this world was thorough as it horrifying. The world of Arrakis or informally known as Dune, is one of harshness and mercilessness, where the greatest commodity is not gold, trinkets, or other frivolous items, but the basic necessity of all human life, water. The weak do not survive on this desert planet, which has cultivated a race of men known as the Fremen, a pointedly named group of blue-eyed individuals who know the ways of the wasteland so that they may live another day. The blending of different languages and customs may seem inexplicable at first, but this just adds to the rich history that is being presented in this book.

The story is that of Paul Atreides, a 15 year old child thrust into manhood and responsibility shortly after his family was displaced from their native home world to rule and govern the desolate planet of Arrakis.

The struggle of Paul with his battle for survival on this new and strange land as he learns the way of the planet is one that captivates the mind and hearts of those who should ever have the pleasure of reading this novel.

At ~880 pages, the book will never feel like a task to read, since once you pick it up, you will not want to stop until you finish. The book is the first in the series by Frank Hebert. This edition contains an afterword by his son Brian Hebert, as well as an appendix of the words, phrases, characters, and titles that are frequently used within the book.

That being said, one of my favorite parts in the story is that between an even younger child and the emperor whom Paul's family are obliged to pledge their allegiance to.

What did you all think of this novel?

Is Dune worth reading or is it just another average, overhyped scifi novel like Foundation?
