This is Stephen King, say something nice about him.

What is his sheer ability to connect to low IQ members of society. He seems to speak the exact language tuned to their ears. Is it a quality of the writing itself or more the branding? when I looked on amazon it is hundreds and hundreds of stupid people talking about what ghost was more haunting or what brutal violence was the most shocking. It is all rather disappointing on a human level.

I'm in mood for King. I've read a few of his novels, mostly the shorter ones and I liked them all. He might not be the best writer but he has an awesome voice and the stories are fun. Also his books are the only ones that actually scared me, I haven't read any other horror books that would accomplish that.

Is there any order in which I should read his books? Or which do you recommend as "must reads"? I've heard a lot of his books tie into the dark tower series, so which books should I read before/after the dark tower books?

(Alternatively, suggest horror books by other writers that are actually scary.)

Yup. When he talks about his writing process, it seems to be that he lets the plot work itself out as he writes. So, he just kind of let's the work end when he feels that he put up enough cool shit in the rest of the book.

Take Desperation for example: a god is released from the earth and is capable of possessing people and animals; it has killed off an entire town and trapped a few survivors inside. How the fuck are they supposed to beat something like this? The ending should be fucking incredible. But King manages to fuck it up by just having the god run out of energy and then blowing it the fuck up when it's defenseless. In 'Salem's Lot the lead vampire is also killed while defenseless.

I like a lot of his novels, but the endings always leave me wanting more. His short stories have more satisfying endings though because they lack the sense of doom. The climax itself needs to equate to the amount of buildup and suspense towards the final fight. If he writes a story about something that challenges the protagonists throughout several hundred pages, it should not end with the villain just getting beaten no problem in a few paragraphs.

I'm reading the dark tower series right now (currently on wizard and glass). I know this journey can't end well, but it's fun to read and it's too late to stop now. The man sure can tell a story though and I will continue to read most everything he puts out.

Do you think it eats away at him, deep down, that he knows he only lucked out. That none of his works will survive or be considered important literary works? He has all the money. He has all the fans. But he doesn't have the talent... and he knows it... and the only way he can cope is by writing more mindless scary books to make money.

I am going to read him and see what all the fuss is all about, both positive and negative.
