Hello /lit/; I need some advice:

I am in an independent study class at my school with two other students who are a bit plebby but seems nice enough. One of the requirements for the class is that we read a book together; what book we read is out choice. I want to read a book that we will all be able to enjoy but that is also a serious piece of literature. We are supposed to come back in two weeks with a list of 5 books as recommendations, after which we will decide together which to read. What should I put on my list and how can I convince the others to pick a good book?

My ideas so far are:
Blood Meridian
Stoner
Something by Nabokov that isn't Lolita bc I don't want to seem too edgy, maybe Pale Fire or Ada
