What are some good books to achieve a firm understanding of World War II and the important factors/battles/dates/events/partnerships/outcomes of it?

I ask because A) We never talked about it much in high school, it was always touched on with a showing of Saving Private Ryan and that was about it and B) Every now and then I'll read a book which references it and I feel like I am missing a lot of subtle points.

I don't need to become a history buff on it, but all I know currently is that Hitler was a bad dude, killed some Jews, Japan attacked the US, the US dropped some bombs, the war ended and Hitler killed himself with his qtgf and I would like a greater comprehension of the actual events of the war
