I got a copy off zlibrary a couple days ago.

The Mercy of Gods - James S.A. Corey

Really disappointing read. Reads like a shitty litrpg imitation of the expanse with zero interesting characters or ideas. Half the book is shitty internal monologue of random characters ‘processing their trauma’ which was the worst part of the expanse (think of the worst naomi chapters ad nauseum), plus some shitty cryptic stream-of-consciousness from the new protomolecule stand-in (which is so unoriginal that many people are guessing this is a stealth sequel/prequel to the expanse). The rest of the book is the totally threadbare litrpg plot, some pointless and forced sexual intrigue, plus some of that ‘competency porn’ style bullshit from the new male lead (ala Andy Weir), but he’s not even competent, actually just mildly intuitive when every other character is dumb as rocks. There’s also absolutely zero attempt to actually write an ending, this is clearly meant to just be part 1 of a new series with zero consideration of it actually working as a self-contained book.

3/10, won’t be reading the sequel, even though I loved the expanse.
