People are quick to point out that the Athenian democracy was very different from what we might expect given that only adult male citizens could vote, but that's nothing.

The biggest difference was the determining of office holders by lot. Most of the time, politicians would literally be picked at random. If everyone is equal (ἰσονομία), why not just pick random people? Their democracy was much more radical than ours ever was. It's a shame it only lasted a few hundred years.
