As far as I'm concerned, likeable main characters are the very core of the story, what runs it and what keeps the reader turning the pages. We want to see what happens to them next, first and foremost, what they do and what challenges they face. Everything else is gravy.

I wrote my own book largely with this principle in mind. Maybe it would scratch your itch.
