His agent and publisher wanted more books out of Fitzgerald and felt his short stories held him back. He wrote short stories for money only. A few were good. Most weren’t. He’s known, though not by many, for writing “cluster stories” around his novels. He’d write like five short stories while working on a novel and canablize them, putting the best lines and metaphors in the book and using the weaker ones in his stories. I wish he’d never married Zelda, that dumb whore, and that he’d not needed money so bad that he compromised his artistic output.
