Dear /lit/,

I was told today that a paper I wrote last year won best undergrad paper of the year, and my uni's lit journal wants to publish it. My professor from freshman comp is also offering to let me take 4000 level writing workshops (taken by both seniors and grad students at my school).

The problem is that I'm an electrical engineering major and have no real desire to write unless it will potentially bring me money. I guess what I'm asking is your opinion on the value of writing workshops. I'm not going to try to squeeze them in unless they are truly beneficial.

Honestly, did you learn anything from creative writing workshops?

I've been given permission to enroll in an advanced workshop at my university based on a story I submitted to the school's literary journal.

I'm just wondering if it's really worth taking, as I'm not an English major and don't plan to write anytime in the future (I mean maybe I will but it's not my priority at all).

I'm in Ancient/Medieval History and Classics and I don't know where you could possibly mean. It's well known in this field that you need to learn the languages to study the civs. The first thing my professors say to their classes at the beginning of a semester is "Are you interested in history or classical studies academically? Then start learning the relevant languages right now". Part of the reason medieval history is so lacking is because of the requisite mastery of several languages, which few are willing to undertake.

I know several PhD students working on their thesis who are scrambling to learn Classical Latin because they neglected it earlier on, and it's so necessary - and their focus is High Medieval and Renaissance.
