The core thesis is that everyone is born in a psychic state of "Primary Integration" where they act in NPC Mode self-preservation according to instinct and socialization.

A strong emotional hazard/crisis will initiate the "Primary Disintegration" and the individual will go into a state of psychosis/neurosis/schizophrenia.

From there, three things happen, they either Cope, and return to a state of more perfectly adapted primary integration, or they Rope, and descend into permanent psychosis

Or, the dissatisfaction they see in themselves due to their old value structure transmutes into an autonomous drive for personal growth.

From there, depending on the individual's development potential, and this x factor of autonomous drive, they will begin to intentionally undergo a "Secondary Multilevel Disintegration" as they embrace the cognitive dissonance inherent in trying to sort out an independently constructed value hierarchy for themselves.

If they are successful and do not become overwhelmed and revert back to earlier levels, they will achieve the final state of "Secondary Integration" where they are just as free of internal conflict as NPCs are, but due to them living in full harmony with the established personality ideal.
