I never meet anyone who's read these books but they were huge at my grade school. Were they just a catholic thing?

I think these were the books that convinced junior high me that dense novels could be fun to read. It’s also funny in retrospect how they’re technically “fantasy” novels yet besides the whole anthropomorphic animal thing, they don’t actually have any supernatural elements.

Considering rereading the serie in pic related to see how it holds up after 15 years.
It was my favorite serie as a child, had the entire collection up until the point I grew out of it. Should I now read them in publishing order (as I usually do for series) or chronological order?
Also I'll be reading them untranslated this time. I remember the moles had a silly patois in my translation. Will this give me trouble in original version?
