The story basically ends with God Emperor and the epilogue of finding the journals. The messiah is treated like a god, his son becomes a god, then becomes a monster, and finally tries to bring about his own demise in such a way that his people could live without him. Heretics and Chapterhouse are basically science fiction inside science fiction, i.e. what would the future future be like after the Atreides empire collapsed

Dune wasn't as LGBTQIAA+ positive as Lord (He, Him) of the Rings

I like to think God Emperor was the last Dune book. Not that the Heretics or Chapterhouse are bad but God Emperor has an ending.

>How does someone with a solid grasp on politics begin to approach more foundational philosophy?
I doubt you have a solid grasp on politics, or else you wouldn't ask. Most people who fancy themselves knowledgeable about politics are actually just polemicists or theorists whose ideas have little bearing the present ownership of the state and the exercise of its powers for the benefit of those owners. For instance, being on this board in 2021 you probbaly think an indo-sufist absolute monarchy is the apotheosis of social organization. However that really has little to do with contemporary politics properly speaking, the only politics which matters, which is less about theory and more about maintaining control of the state by cultivating and directing public energies which might contest the state into reinforcing its own stability. You should read and study God Emperor of Dune to better understand this. Most philosophers have been poor politicians. One of Plato's dialogs (I forget which) makes this quite clear with the example of ship's captain not being a job you can just announce you are qualified for and demand to be given. But on the other had, it would be useful for the state to identify obnoxious, rebellious elements that want to rule, and give them the prestigious role of controlling or suppressing other obnoxious elements.

>At best, fiction just serves as a long-form example of whatever philosphy the author wants to explore.
Fiction is far more concise and economic than whatever bloviating scholastic debate you've waded into that requires years of prerequisite reading to parse.
