I just don't understand the appeal of Baldwin's fiction prose even though I'm also enchanted by it(talking about Giovanni's Room and Another Country)
When you look at it at sentence level, it's pretty simple and nondescript, but it just comes alive when you are in the momentum of reading. I just don't understand why and it makes me feel stupid.

Baldwin was ugly even by nigger standards
