It's a fee-paying school that, when it was founded, was also set up as a charity to let members of the general public have the opportunity to attain education.

Eton, harrow, Winchester, etc. Are the big three prestigious public schools with up to 40 grand a year in fees.

I went to a grammar school which was older than dulwich (founded in 1551) but was not a fee paying school and only admitted on high test scores. Grammar schools are not as prestigious as public schools and the government seems to hate them for some reason.
