> Abstinence—voluntary or forced—sets the individual both above and below the Species, makes him into an alloy of Saint and Imbecile that intrigues and abashes us. Whence our equivocal hatred for the Monk, as for any man who has renounced woman, who has renounced being like us. We shall never forgive him his solitude: it degrades as much as it disgusts us; it is a provocation.

> Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, in the last century, spoke best of love and of music. Yet each frequented only brothels and — of all composers — the former adored Rossini, the latter Bizet.

Your heroes have been assassinated with words. How are you going to cope?

I can, and I will. Further discovery would be nothing but an exercise in -- verification. The self-effacement of action -- I can not be brothered to even waste more nothingness

Anyone think this guy gets too much hate? Like I get that his works can sometimes read like an emo teens diary or whatever, but I think he's at least a really good writer. I'll admit that maybe his philosophy is a bit juvenile, but speaking from experience he's a good intro to philosophy because of how accessible his ideas are. But you've gotta admit that his prose is really good and when I read On the Heights of Despair I really did enjoy his prose style and thought that is was really beautiful. Inb4 "Literally who?" It's Emil Cioran.

>A zoologist who observed gorillas in their native habitat was amazed by the uniformity of their life and their vast idleness. Hours and hours without doing anything. Was boredom unknown to them? This is indeed a question raised by a human, a busy ape. Far from fleeing monotony, animals crave it, and what they most dread is to see it end. For it ends, only to be replaced by fear, the cause of all activity. Inaction is divine; yet it is against inaction that man has rebelled. Man alone, in nature, is incapable of enduring monotony, man alone wants something to happen at all costs — something, anything.... Thereby he shows himself unworthy of his ancestor: the need for novelty is the characteristic of an alienated gorilla

>I don’t understand why we must do things in this world, why we must have friends and aspirations, hopes and dreams. Wouldn’t it be better to retreat to a faraway corner of the world, where all its noise and complications would be heard no more? Then we could renounce culture and ambitions; we would lose everything and gain nothing; for what is there to be gained from this world?
this is the realest shit

The creature smiled, but it was mere appearance; muscles contorted, misinterpreted by my good will against my better judgment. I sank and waited for the facsimile to fade, and it did, just as hurriedly as it would have had it been real.
