Do you also feel like every magic realism novel after García Márquez was just trying hard to copy his style without understanding why it works? I remember reading a book in High School for a test, it was called "Como agua para chocolate", it was so shallow compared to anything that García Márquez wrote, it was a literally soap opera but with random magical shit so it was like your grandma in her 80s was telling you a soap opera.

Aside from true crime and all that, I once blithely picked up some Spanish bastard's book at the library because his name was really famous and s on all these lists. Fucking thing starts out with an old man fucking and in love with a 12 or 14 year old prostitute. Detailed shit. I quickly returned it. Tempted to put Neruda's pic up just because I don't like him much but I think it was this guy.

Reading Love in the Time of Cholera. It's quite interesting, really. Anyone else enjoy it? Is the movie any good? Sorry to kill a thread for this.

What's the deal with this guy? He just looks like some typical Spic. But he writes like a fucking angel or something.

Honest question: why does "magical realism" trigger /lit/
I was taught it was a legitimate genre/literary movement

Hey /lit/, I'm reading One Hundred Years of Solitude with a group of people now. I know a tiny bit of Colombian history, mostly from Open Veins of Latin America, and I was struck by how well the chapters on the war seem to correspond to the events of La Violencia. I checked on wiki, and it turns out that Gárcia Márquez was born in 1927, which means that he was still a young man when it began. I'm starting to think that the book is a thinly veiled allegory of Colombia's recent history, or the author's conception of it, anyway. The other people in my group don't care about that at all, and see more "timeless" themes like the way war changes people in the book.

What do you guys think? Am I on the right track, or have I spent too much time reading about history?

No spoilers, please. I just began chapter 9.

Also, this is my first time here. Please be gentle.

I don't have a lot of time to read, so I'm aiming to read 10 essential books in 2015. Which 10 books would you recommend? I'm thinking about starting with a book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
