Reading Protestant Work Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. I got it years ago and don't remember where I got it, but I found it recently and started reading it up on a whim. Its great, I'm on page 150 and I think I am going to finish it tonight.

>In Europe the rising bourgeoisie want a revolutionary theology to pair with the social revolution against the ancien regime
>Traditional workers had no systematic and rational program for attaining wealth and then more wealth
>Calvin and Puritans create a cult of work as a rebellion against the formal Church. We come to a people bred on a sense of "monkishness in the world" i.e. the methodical life of the monk but applied to business life
>The elect can be known by their industry and spiritual isolation because this intensifies their relationship with God only with no chance for idolatrous slippage to occur
>criteria of success in a Capitalist economy (efficient use of capital through permanently forward-looking investment and such) dovetail with radical Protestant ethics bent toward work with no ostentatious display of wealth
>Industry and production come to be identified with capital P Progress
>These concepts that were in origin theological become secularized due to their economic utility. Economic Progress is synonymous with "Godliness" and the Protestant ethic, stripped of its supernatural or even religious content and orientation, chugs along into the future
Did I miss anything? Listened to this on a car ride.

Don't love the world or anything in the world, don't love material posesiones, love knowledge instead.

>What if someone uses money to do good?
That's what the quote is referring to, Charity. Give your money to the poor, etc, etc.

And why did you post Aquinas?.

Okay so basically I have to toil and struggle in soul-crushing conditions in exchange for a poverty wage because a German monk some 500 years ago thought it would be funny to nail a piece of paper containing his worthless thoughts to cathedral door?

I just finished reading this and it perplexes me how people think Weber was not an anti-capitalist. He basically means that capitalism has an irrational religious fear (bordering with mental illness) of not being counted among the elects as its foundation. He also accuses the doctrine of predestination of being a convenient justification for economic inequality and paying workers wages below bare minimum necessary to survive. Towards the end he even remarks that division of labour and specialization will culminate in the Nietzschean last man.

Does protestantism promote a work ethic that helps capitalism thrive?
