Is escapism and fantasy superior to the (((real world)))?

I recently started reading pic related and I'm freaked out because he's literally me. The similarities between me and the narrator are almost scary. Even weird details are similar, from insanely elaborate daydreams to barely recognizing myself in photos. I'm scared bros, how do I make sure I don't end up like him?

Any other writers of note who felt chronic alienation from the world and their fellow men? I can think of Kierkegaard and Proust off the top of my head.
