>Iliad & Odyssey
When I first got the intuition that I could like literature the first think I picked up was kafka's process and it fealt mostly like a chore, so i dropped it halway and didn't read for a while. I repeated the same mistake several times with various books above my present ability to understand, I even followed philosophy courses at my uni for a few months. Moral: I didn't start reading seriously until much later.

Also: you just read one (1) author ffs.

Better to start browsing anthology, reading a selection or a handbook if you really want to explore your feeling of disgust. Maybe you could even like some, or at least get an indirect understanding of why some people other than you read poetry.
