My boyfriend is a literal brainlet, I fear. He is into astrology, numerology, Jordan Peterson, Hare Krishna shit, Sadhguru, that After Virtue book, that Nassim Taleb guy etc. What are some books that will help him overcome this stupidity? I’m bored of him.

I’m currently writing on incels and the misuse of Nietzschean philosophy and what I see is often sound bytes of Peterson’s writings or pseudo-philosophizing. I’m looking currently through his first book 12 Rules for Life which is largely Peterson’s cringey musings about tradition and why today’s fathers are bad for our society. His claims are often baseless or unsubstantiated.

I have this feeling he was inspired by Nietzsche’s narcissistic writing style and he tries to be provocative as such. Ironically, he grossly misunderstands Nietzsche (or purposefully misuses him). He writes so obscurely so that no one knows what he’s talking about and then he follows it with a Nietzsche quote as if quotes from Nietzsche, without context, can support his claims.

Here’s an example p. 79 from 12 Rules for Life: “Don’t underestimate the power of vision and direction. There are irresistible forces, able to transform what might appear to be unconquerable obstacles into traversable pathways and expanding opportunities. Strengthen the individual. Start with yourself. Take care of yourself. Define who you are. Refine your personality. Choose your destination and articulate your Being. As the great 19th century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche noted, ‘He whose life has a why can bear almost any how.’”

Two things: 1) that’s a false quote from aphorism 12 of Twilight of the Idols, it’s a re-write from Viktor Frankl. 2) Peterson seems to be backing up his quasi-master morality with something more comparable to slave morality.

I mean it just hurts to read.
