Are there any horror books that give the same feeling of the Mist? It's hard to describe, but the feeling of isolation and unknowingness, or just strange and mysterious events. I hate it when they try and explain something about the force of evil (unless it's pure conjecture with no proof). Just takes all the fun out of it, you know?

Rats in the Walls is good
The Hound is another great one, that one creeps me the eff out and makes for a good campfire story too.
Pickman's Model is also a fun one, I just like the description of the baby-stealing picture. Eugh.
There's this other really short one, the name of which is escaping me at the moment, where a man comes upon this old guy in the woods with a book from an elder god, and it is slowly revealed that the man has been capturing travelers and eating them.
Some of his longer stuff (Dunwitch Horrow, Mountains, Cthulu) are a little lacking I think. Lovecraft's strength for me isn't in his narration and ability to string a story together (see pic), but his ability to imagine fantastically dark realities in just a snapshot.
I actually thought that shadow over Innsmouth was a little laughable. His run through the town was pretty good, but I don't think the horror of fish-people has aged very well.
