The Grimms were masterful lexicographers (the current German dictionary is still basically theirs just updated) and the 1st edition of their tales is a compendium that they personally collected from the German volk through extensive effort and travel in a manner evocative of Herodotus in order to preserve their culture and heritage.

The 7th version is what Disney stuff is based off of. Almost unrecognisable as the genuine folk tales and were changed in various ways by primarily one of the brothers to make money and become financially secure.
