To be fair most of /lit/ hates it. I read it because of the threads on here thinking it would be completely terrible but it was decent. I wouldn't say it was anywhere near great or even good but it was ok; it's still the worst book I've ever read because of /lit/ (other than L'Academie but that being terrible was the whole point).

There are little subtleties I've appreciated but they're overshadowed by how cliched the developing (and described) relationships between the characters have been. It's very easy to visualize Rooney's prose and that has a positive effect on tone--but so far things are just monotonously building to a foreseeable dynamic. Rooney also namedropped Baudrillard for no real reason and had Frances put on Van Morrison--if this is a pattern and she's just going to ape resonance via superficial allusions like these, I get why midwits are attracted to her writing.
