Precious little to love in this world, huh. Maybe that scarcity of lovability is exactly what makes those things valuable.

This weather of doom and gloom outside, I can't help but love it for being so serene. Makes me feel as if I'm one of those moody victorian novels. Did any ESL ever tell you, what the greatest boon of writing in a language that is not your own is? The emotional distance that it puts between you and the text, things you'd feel strange to write so plainly in your own tongue, they flow like downpour beating on sewer pipes in their tinny harmony, it liberates one like nothing else.

I'm about to enroll in university again. The two choices I'm vacillating between are English and Classics. For the record, I'm an ESL. After I'm done with either of these, I'm planning on doing an English/German translator Master's.

My heart pulls me closer to Classics, but I have no illusions about its near-uselessness on the job market. English, on the other hand, would offer a smoother transition into my Master's, and would probably look better on paper than a Classics degree. I'm conflicted about choosing either. There's also the fact that the Classics department of my university of choice has been suffering from constant downsizing for decades now due to the unpopularity of Classics, I wonder whether it's just there for show or if people there take things seriously.

What book would you give to a person who knows for sure that they will die in the foreseeable future?
