Are all his books as good as Crime and Punishment? Should I read The Idiot after it? Does he go into philosophical tangents in every one of his works? What authors have a style similar to Dostoyevsky?

Dostoevsky was an overrated hack. His prose is inelegant and rambling—I realize he wrote a lot as more words = more money for him, but that doesn't excuse bad literature. His character development is shallow at best, and on closer inspection his novels are shallow "thrillers"—reread any of his works and you'll be bored out of your mind as you'll already know the "twist." Furthermore, his "takes" are all garbage. He was a slavophilic, xenophobic Orthodox Christian, thus resulting in half-baked, pseudointellectual philosophical "takes." Dostoevsky reads like an evangelical bible-thumper who took too much adderall.

Don't get me wrong, at times Dostoevsky can write well—I partically enjoyed the banned chapter "At Tikhon's"; even though I disagree with Dostoevesky's message, reading that chapter made me think about my nihilistic worldview again. Still, I wouldn't consider Dostoevsky a "great" author. His contemporary, Leo Tolstoy, blows him out of the water.

Dostoeveski was a hack who was completely spooked by religion. His writing style is excessively flowery and a chore to get through, and the philosophical insights he makes are shallow, pedantic, and tainted by his unwavering belief in "God." I should've just read Nietzche instead; I can't believe I wasted time on this clown.

Why does everyone love him so much?

Reactionary pseud or philisophical genius? About to read Demons but apparently it's a polemic against radicals and socialists; Lenin apparently called it "reactionary filth." Not sure if I want to read it being Leftist myself, but should I still give it a go?

Peterson's 12 Rules is an amazing work! Specially the way he reconciles science and religion, it's extraordinary, specially if you're familiar with his references (Carl Jung, Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, archetypes, etc) this book is a very good summary of what he teaches in his lectures.

What do you guys think of Dostoevsky's overall theme in his books that religion is useful to society as a means of social cohesion?

He lived as a christian his whole life, even though he most likely didn't believe in the literal word of the bible.

I find myself purchasing a lot of books, and starting on one and reading several chapters or so. Then I won't read it for ages, and lose track of what happened, so I start on a new book or start again.

How do I remain consistent with reading and keeping up with what's happening?

i want to learn russian. would reading a dostoevsky novel in the original language be a good way of doing this? it's not really like the germanic/romantic languages that a lot of english speakers are able to learn because they are already similar to english.. is it doable? has anyone here learned russian?
