i finished great expectations yesterday and then read the introduction and realised that all of the symbolism and hidden meanings were unnoticed my be. how do I comprehend books beyond their plot and read in between the lines?

Has anyone read this? I enjoyed it quite a bit but there are some things I question (not necessarily the validity, but the worth of). For example, reading through a book very fast at the beginning, then rereading it more thoroughly. When should I actually do this? For example, I try to skim through textbook chapters before reading them, but I doubt it would be worth it to actually read through it quickly first. Other than practical books, and maybe philosophical books, I don't see much use in this. Should I do this with, say, Plato's Republic when I start reading it?

Alder is a pretty based fellow
