So The Hunger Games is being compared to the Twilight trilogy.

To me, the only thing they have in common is a love triangle, and people are already starting with the 'Team Gale' and 'Team Peeta' bullshit.

If this movie gets pigeonholed in that pathetic category or mary-sues I'm going to have to kill someone.

What is /lit/'s opinion of The Hunger Games trilogy? I just finished it and I really liked it. But I know "young adult" books tend to have a stigma surrounding them (often for good reason) so it wouldn't surprise me if I'm in the minority here.

So, what happened to Europe? Did they suffer the same fate or was just North America?

"Crazy ignorant single mom novel" should be a genre so book stores segregate it in a separate shelf and you can easily filter it out on the internet.

So, today my mom gave me this book as an unexpected present. I'm 20 pages into it and the bland writing is really getting to me. There's no interesting syntax, the tempo is really jarring and stuttering, and it's just really boring so far. What's y'alls thoughts on this book? Cormac McCarthy pulled off the rugged dystopian novel better in my opinion.

the Hunger Games? Who has read them? I was surprised by the series. Even Stephen King gave it a good review. It was laden with suspense, and I seriously had problems putting it down.

This is quite possibly the most terrible book I have ever had the misfortune to read in my entire life. My "friend" recommended it to me because I hadn't read any good books in a while. I can't even describe to you the disgust. There is nothing original about it. At all. I'm pretty certain the "angst-ridden teen in a dystopian society, struggling to survive and bang a blonde kid she has just met" is not a unique concept. Despite this initially, I thought, "Hey. Maybe this will ACTUALLY teach me something as literature should. Perhaps the author has expounded upon the idea of hunger and the acquisition of food, and related to the reader the concept that life is essentially a struggle for survival and success, and officials take advantage of this fact by treating the common man as if he is a pawn in an entertaining game." HOW ABOUT NO. The author made it into an adolescent romance. A ROMANCE. Every chapter attempts to end with suspense, but leaves nothing for the reader's mind to wonder about. Ex. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah KATNISS FOUND A GUN. SHE TURNED IT OVER. A NAME STARTING WITH P WAS ON THE GUN. Instead of ending the chapter here, it will read: PEETAH'S NAME. WAS ON. THE GUN. Wow such suspense. I'm shaking in my tits. And to conclude the writing was just in general bland and lacking. I HATE THIS BOOK.

tl;dr The Hunger Games can suck my District 13 balls.

I just finished Battle Royale; I thought it was pretty good. Too bad they never released the movie in English.

So /lit/, what are your criticisms of the Hunger Games trilogy?

I've noticed people say that the first is the best and the next 2 aren't so good, but I found that the second was much more interesting, presenting a more complex and developed plot, more memorable characters, and just having themes and ideas that were quite a bit beyond the first whose main focus was the games more than anything, and not even one that incorporates philosophy or a study of humanity so much as a mildly exciting action story about a teenager surviving in a forest while killing other teenagers (which to be honest, Battle Royale did better).

Of course, this may be because I read all 3 in the span of a couple of days, and so the story is fused together for me rather than being 3 separate chunks. By themselves, perhaps the first is the most self-contained and easiest to process story.

The second half of the third book did kind of fall apart, the author just deciding to kill everyone and cutting the final and most important part of the war into some shortened fairly anti-climactic summary, but before then it was pretty good in my opinion.

What did you guys think?

>Never really liked reading
>friend keeps telling me to read this book
>finally give in and read it
>I am now almost finished with the book

I fucking love this book. i hope the other 2 are just as good if not better.

So... I've heard good things about this series. But I can't help but get the impression it's the Twilight version of Battle Royale. Especially since the trailer for the movie just hit.

Does Hunger Games hold up compared to BR? I'm not expect them to have similar tones, but is HG at least far enough away from Twilight to be enjoyable?
