How have your tastes changed over time as a reader and why do you think they did?

For me, I used to love dark/disturbing works like pic related. I actually made that pic and read all of those books--they used to be my bread and butter from high school to my early 20s. But lately I can't stomach stuff that dark anymore. I read the first chapter to The Painted Bird the other night and while the writing was really good and compelling I just felt completely dreadful reading it.

I've finished college and work night shifts at a hospital now and my brother passed away a couple years ago after losing a battle with schizophrenia. I guess I just got to the point where there was enough darkness in my life that indulging in it wasn't fun anymore.

Last night I picked up Mort, a Discworld novel by Terry Pratchett. My grandpa also passed away from Alzheimer's so I've been thinking about Pratchett lately and what he had to go through. I had bought my copy when I was around 14 and for some reason never read it til last night. I don't usually read fluffier/lighter stuff but I was pleasantly surprised. It was one of my brother's favorite books and I can see why.
