Before political ideology was all co-opted in a great power play, there used to be a different conservative-liberal dichotomy.
Conservatism was the camp that would prefer to keep traditions of old, ways of solving problems, obedience to king and/or country, if change was to happen it should happen slowly.
Liberal ideology back in the 1750s was at it's philosophical core, the rejection of tradition, or at least the idea that every new generation was entitled to remake society as they saw fit, no more king, equality for all, and so forth - the French Revolution sort.
