The real question is what was The Kid's fucking problem. Or Prigozhin's, for that matter. Their fundamental flaw was being lukewarm, neither hot nor cold. If you took this character's personality, and inserted into someone outwardly attractive (basically anything but a fat ugly bald old albino freak) he would have been received in an entirely different way.
I bet you could duplicate BM's plot completely with no differences, even the ending, make the Kid in to a faceless chick, and sell it as a dark romance novel, and become rich.
