you cant appreciate a book for the aesthetic quality of its prose much at all when reading an audiobook. when you have a physical book in your hands you can see the sentences and the words visually and because you are saying them to yourself internally you can better sense their quality. also because you're the one reading it you can put emphasis and accentuate specific words, yes the person reading an audiobook could do this but its not guaranteed and you don't get to pick them yourself. also when your reading a real book you don't have to work in a completely linear fashion from one line to the next, instead you can choose to look back and re read things to help contextualise and understand the book. yes you can do this with an audiobook but as I said before you cannot grasp the language nearly as well and instead of simply moving your eyes you've got to get ur phone out then slide the play bar thing to find the exact sentence that you have in mind etc. its just a tedious waste of time. oh and another thing actually reading a book as opposed to having it read to you enables you to focus infinitely better and therefore actually comprehend what you're reading, this is because when you're listening to an audiobook your eyes are not occupied and so you are almost guaranteed to find something for them to be doing which is just a distraction from the book, now obviously you dont have this problem with a tangible book because you're eyes are reading the fucking page. Now suppose you were to sit with your eyes closed like in ur pic then your internal monologue (assuming you have one and are not an npc bug man) is going to be running wild like it does when u just sit in silence with ur eyes shut. (maybe this is just me but my internal monologue is pretty tyrannical, I cannot control it without difficulty)

lol

then again the sympathetic to futurism strain in me agrees that such a sentiment is the only way out.

No but it probably proves Uncle Ted right, yet again.
