I have this chart. Scholasticism is entered by first reading the Greeks and the Romans. Its all very commentary heavy.

I think this might be a good place to start if nothing else. I've been slowly working my way through this list

Language of Creation is a nicely concise intro+summary of the most essential and foundational biblical symbolism contained in one book. Flood, fire, work and rest, the axle and the wheel, the pillar/mountain, breath, the sun and moon (such as Samson and David), coverings of skin, the stranger, textiles and fringes, cherubim, the altar, the snake and the tree, chaotic hybrids, agriculture and livestock, the head and body, and so on. Rene Girard is also great for some insights on the thinking and conversion experience early Christians were likely going through subconsciously and consciously

Read the rsv or esv translation if it's your first time reading the Bible, whichever is cheaper on a place like ebay.
Jonathan Pageau has a youtube channel that's pretty good at introducing people to the christian view of patterns of reality.

Pic is his reccomended reading list from the website he runs with other orthodox christians. You don't have to subscribe to the eastern orthodoxy specific parts, but this list is also good for a general overview.

I made this using the recommended books list on the Symbolic World website, a site run by Jonathan Pageau (I recommend his youtube channel if you want content to listen to) and other orthodox christians. The goal of it is to help people see symbolism and patterns of reality through a christian view, maybe someone will get use out of it.
