Romance is a luxury of idleness when resources are abundant. When they are scare and time and energy is at a premium, people will revert to more primal behavioral patterns.

We are descended from animalistic, savage and brutal creatures that engaged in sister rape, infanticide, human sacrifice and just murder the next tribe for food, and so on.

The tl;dr is technological advancement freed up psychological time spent trying not do die which now had to find something to occupy itself with, and well, the euphoria induced by romantic narratives is nothing more than pleasure seeking from reproduction but not operating on satisfying the primal sex drive but on satisfying the social niche drive.
