Fantômas
For real, I was once in same situation, this was the book that made me feel alive again.

Arsène Lupin is also nice, if you stick to short stories. I especially recommend Seven of Hearts and The Man in the Goatskin.
Don't try longer novels for now, some are still comfy, but those don't have a translation as far as I can see.

The writers left clues here and there about the past of Fantômas, but never ventured to actually explore any of it. Even when past caught up with him and started influencing the present, it was all left very vague.

I love the entire Fantômas series, but you can just put the first one as the starting point to a wild adventure. Authors are Pierre Souvestre and Marcel Allain.

Arsène Lupin by Maurice Leblanc is another of my favorite, but this series is a mixed bag where short stories are the best flavor. So put in:
Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Thief
The Confessions of Arsène Lupin
Barnett & Co. Agency (also known as Arsène Lupin Intervenes)

I got some other books that make a really good read, but I wouldn't really call them my favorite of all time yet.

The only cover from the original edition that wasn't made by Gino Starace, it was actually based on a poster advertising medicine that some rejected designer left at the publishing house, with pills being replaced by a bloody knife.
There was no name on the poster and the designer never came forward, so he missed the opportunity to be recorded in history.

I am sad they never went into detail on who Juan North was.
We know he was an aristocrat and a relative of the Hesse-Weimar king, and that after a huge scandal had to flee and leave everything behind, including his own son.
There is already a small implication then that he was Fantômas, since rumors had him perish in shipwreck (Fantômas doesn't shy away from sinking ships to "kill" his identity) or living in South America (where Fantômas met Etienne Rambert). it's later that we find out son of Juan, Vladimir, is actually son of Fantômas, but Juan North is never mentioned again, never are the events behind the disappearance of this legend revealed or if he was a separate person whose identity Fantômas took over.
Or even why the hell does a man from German-speaking country have a Spanish name?

It would have been a good theme to write about, since we never know what set Fantômas on his path and why he was so paranoid and detached from people.

Much like Fantômas, I see (almost) everything.
Sometimes, when I recognize a similarity, I wonder if a person was inspired by a character or were they attracted to them cause the similarity already existed? Fantômas was the kind of character that could get out of almost any situation because of his quick thinking and eloquence. While Desnos at the end succumbed to illness, at least these same traits made him a person worth praise and remembered by history.

You should read the entire Fantômas series by Souvestre and Allain. I don't know if the christian in you will like it, but the homosexual should appreciate the image of a tall, athletic man in tights.
