Because his writing is dry, and most of his series are "inspired" by history (as in he takes real cultures and adds a fantastical spin) which makes them incredibly dull. If I wanted to read about Mongol conquests I'd go read about mongol conquests, the reality is far more interesting than fiction.
That's the problem with drawing from history, if you take inspiration from any of the actually interesting parts, people accuse you of being unrealistic. Pic related.
