Hey /lit/,
Looking to see if there's a consensus. In terms of Cormac McCarthy, what's better - Blood Meridian or The Road?

I've read The Road and loved it, but haven't tried BM yet. These two seem to be his most acclaimed novels, though.

I've read this twice since I first found out about it about 12 months ago and I'm actively forcing myself not to read it again so soon. Kind of hard to get into, but if you stick with it you'll know what I mean.

Post a good book.

That's all. You don't even need to post a written comment.

Yes, that was quite a dark and depressing story. I think however that Blood Meridian left me in a darker mood when I finished. McCarthy just has a certain talent for bothering the hell out of your faith in humanity or sense of hope. And the ending of Blood Meridian really just tired me out I guess.

Why is this considered McCormac's masterpiece?

And I've listened to a lecture at Yale and read other work... but why do I feel like an idiot just thinking the Judge represents Satan/Evils of Progress?

Hey guys, I just finished this, and quite enjoyed it. Yes, it was slow in some parts, but the visuals of the landscape were amazing, and some of the speeches given by the Judge were amazing. I also liked the bleakness of the whole story/setting.
I'm looking at reading more McCarthy, but was wondering what you guys would recommend. I'd be interested in No Country, but I've heard it's not quite as good as his other work. I've heard the Borders Trilogy is quite good, but that the first book is more of a love story.
Any ideas?

Hey /lit/

I've just started reading Blood Meridian, and as some of you may know, McCarthy doesn't use quotation marks. My question is, what is the point of not using them?

I'm not complaining really, this isn't the first book I've read where quotations aren't used (e.g. Blindness). If anything it makes me focus on what's being said more.
So what's the point? Is it some form of stream of consciousness thing or what?
Thanks!

Only halfway through and the nightmares are starting to get pretty bad. I want to finish it but I'm having trouble coping.

Anyone else read this and what did you think?

I'm halfway through, but not enjoying it that much. The descriptions of landscapes etc. are incredibly vivid, but I don't feel he gives enough of the characters. The language can also sometimes be difficult for me.

DIscuss.

I finished reading it at 4am today. The sickeningly pale and hairless contours of the Judge's voluminous husk haunts my dreams.
If nothing else, Judge Holden ITT.

Was initially shocked and eventually bored by the violence, but this is nonetheless the best book I've read all year.

McCarthy always makes me question what I assume to know about storytelling and writing. Also, Judge Holden is the best damn character I've ever read, aside from Anton Chigurh.

A lame attempt of popularizing murder and scalping.

This is plain filth and I can't believe so many people consider it literature

Not only my favourite book I read in the past year, but also now one of my favourite books of all time.

The Judge is one of the most well-written characters ever.. I think Harold Bloom compared him to Iago.

How are All the Pretty Horses and The Crossing? I've got those lying around somewhere.. already read The Road. I really want to read Child of God.

Rate the last book you read (NOT what you are reading now).

I give "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy a B-minus. I had been led to expect more, and I wasn't particularly enthusiastic about the affected prose, although it worked well in places.
