They're means to an end. Incidentally they all advise you to enjoy and be moral in THIS life. They are also an aptly grand treasure-house for humanity's beauty, learning, and emotion. Everything our ancestors did is passed down, giving voice to it is critical. Science on its own might accomplish this, but revolutionary politics is antithetical to it, so in today's world you often see people returning to spirituality rather than try to reconcile the two. So despite the lack of a literal afterlife, people find in spirituality the recognition of truths about our past and future, which science presently cannot deliver.

What are your thoughts on Jesus' moment of doubt on the cross? Wouldn't it be him exorcising his reason in decrying god for abandoning him, given his situation?

Thank you. Don't really have the time to learn ancient greek rn but maybe someday. Is there any discernable difference between NIV and ESV? Also why are these editions less aesthetic than the KJV? Is it because of the antiquated use of english?

It's a good read, even very good. It's not a perfect book; the one sex scene (and there's just one, if memory serves), for example, seemed out-of-place and unnecessarily smutty and tonally wrong.

/lit/ is fucking retarded when it comes to books that are simply written to be good reads, not great lit. E.g., the Harry Potter books, genre fiction, and books like Pillars of the Earth.

That said, it takes genuine talent, possessed by relatively few, to be a good storyteller who can write a good read.

Pillars is great at conveying the atmosphere and texture of medieval life. It has some great characters, and a compelling story that turns interestingly in part on the developing science of engineering and architecture. We get a plausible, humanistic glimpse into the evolution of those sciences (i.e., we see how smart, talented people advanced the science).

Give it an hour or two of your time and see if you like it.
