Am I the only one who had to read miserable novels from 6th to 12th grade?

I mean fuck, it seemed like every book we read was either about the Holocaust or American slavery. I literally hated books before I got to high school.

Then when I was in 10th grade I picked up The Count of Monte Cristo on my own and it was like a revelation. A book about nobility, adventure, mature romance, duels and high culture? And superbly written? Holy fuck, this is amazing. And then I read Don Quixote, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shanty, Faust, Toilers of the Sea, and so on.

For the rest of school I sparknoted every assigned novel and kept reading my own books. But when I look back now, I can't help but think school almost ruined literature for me with the wretched, depressing books they forced me to read.

Did anyone else go through this?

It is really easy. Think of Dumas as the J.K. Rowling of the XIXth century (thousands time better).

Also, The Musketeers.
