She was directly inspired by abortion shit. Her archives are at U of T and I had a prof who did a tonne of research into her for a lecture series/book he wrote on the development of Canadian literature. In his lecture on Atwood (see below) he mentions annotated newspaper clippings about the abortion debate in the US. Also, even though he obviously respects Atwood it's had to find her likable after listening to the lecture.

The Good
>accessibility
>plot is thin but interesting
> the narrator's mental descent is carried out extremely well and is very subtle save for the last section--but that's still earned
>an interesting time-capsule as far as it's a representation of boomer sensibilities regarding Canadian identity/feminism/commodification of nature
>if you're familiar with Survival it's interesting in the context of what Atwood had to say about what makes Canadian Literature distinctly Canadian

The Bad
>self-insert/survivalist Mary Sue
>the themes and ideas of the novel are shallowly presented (pic related)
>the fact all characters are shallow stereotypes isn't just meant to be a commentary on the isolation of the narrator (the reason that's just a cope will make sense after having read the novel)
>some of the symbolism is lazy (especially when it's defined with reference to characterization)
I don't like Atwood.

Oryx And Crake is the book Atwood fans fall back on if you criticize her so you should read it if you discuss literature outside of this board (it will be brought up).
