This thread is why you shouldn't take advice from philosophers and thinkers who didn't actively fulfill their own thought in their own lives. Guys like Nietzsche and Schopenhauer are fine enough to read, but they're bad to take advice from because when you look at their lives you discover that everything they wrote was basically cope as a reaction to how their lives turned out.

You need to only get life advice from people who practiced what they preached. This is why reading the saints is so helpful and edifying, because you're reading people who actually put their thought into practice successfully.

The novel as a form of art is essentially Protestant, because it is fundamentalist and individualistic.

Catholicism is often expressed best in poetry, not in prose. There are even Catholic saints who were poets.

Now that he's a saint we really need to promote John Henry Newman more. Newman is /lit/ as fuck, the man even wrote poetry. Pretty good poetry too. And he's a formidable thinker. I think he's going to be the next Doctor of the Church. Newman I think can help us navigate Modernity while still allowing the Church to remain timeless.

Based Newman enjoyer. I'm so glad he's a saint now. Newman is very special to me, I feel a profound connection to him.

I've actually been meaning to read the Dream of Gerontius for a while now. Supposedly it's quite good.

James Joyce actually considered Newman to have the finest prose in the history of the English language.

England will not bloom again until it blooms with the red roses of Christ and Mary. England must return to Rome and Rome's Church. Newman knew this; he was a prophet. The Dowry of Mary has spent too long astray from the Universal Church. She has been mighty and ruled the world; now she is bereft and poor. She can again be renewed, but she must at last surrender her final obstinacy, and admit that she should never have left Rome's embrace.

Well, whom did James Joyce say was the "greatest of English prose writers" ?
