Love...no such thing.
Whatever it is that binds families and married couples together, that's not love. That's stupidity or selfishness or fear. Love doesn't exist.
Self interest exists, attachment based on personal gain exists, complacency exists. But not love. Love has to be reinvented, that’s certain

Let's post our favorite poem from our favorite poet.

Barbarian - Aurthur Rimbaud

Long after the days and the seasons, and people and countries.
The banner of raw meat against the silk of seas and arctic flowers;
(they do not exist). Recovered from the old fanfares of heroism,--
which still attack the heart and head,-- far from the old assassins.
-- Oh! the banner of raw meat against the silk of seas and arctic flowers;
(they do not exist).-- Bliss! Live embers raining in gusts of frost.--
Bliss!-- fires in the rain of the wind of diamonds
flung out by the earth's heart eternally carbonized for us.
-- O world! (Far from the old retreats and the old flames, still heard, still felt.)
Fire and foam. Magic, veering of chasms and clash of icicles against the stars.
O bliss, O world, O music! And forms, sweat, eyes
and long hair floating there. And white tears boiling,--
O bliss!-- and the feminine voice reaching to the bottom of volcanoes
and grottos of the arctic seas. The banner...

RImbaud--a mythic name--his life as extraordinary as his work was influential in redirecting the course, first of French, and then of world poetry. He is, indeed, the very symbol of what we now call "modern" literature; nearly a hundred years before the arrival of the "mind-expanding" drugs, Rimbaud understood that the borders of the writer's consciousness must be extended and made the deliberate attempt to use hallucination as a creative method.

I am reading Rimbaud in english for the first time after reading in his poems in french and in a portuguese translation.

I have to ask: what the fuck was this Oliver Bernard doing? The whole thing is ruined. The rhymes are gone, the cadence is gone, even part of the imagery is gone. Was his objective to make Rimbaud seem as dull as possible? Is there a decent english translation out there?

Why are European males so good at art, science, math, literature, and so on? Is it genetics, or simply superior culture?

Hi /lit/, I'm a Library and Information Science-student and I'm currently working on a project related to the promotion of literature. The project itself consists of an exercise aimed at aiding for example library-users in the process of reading and developing meaning from poetry. Basically, what I'd like to ask you to do is to read a poem by Arthur Rimbaud called "Bottom" and then to use one or a few pieces of the concrete imagery in that poem to write a short piece of prose where you utilize and/or develop that imagery. I'd also like to ask you, if you have the time to participate, to please tell me how/if the exercise helped or hindered you - here in the thread - and I will also include at the bottom of the OP a link to a strawpoll where you can quantifiably rate that experience.
The poem itself goes like this:

Bottom

Reality being too prickly for my noble character, - I never-
theless found myself at my lady's house as a big gray-blue bird
soaring towards the cornices of the ceiling, trailing my wings in
the shadows of the evening.
I became, at the foot of the canopy that supported her be-
loved jewels and her masterpieces of physics, a great bear with
violet gums and fur grizzled with sorrow, eyes on the crystal and
silver of the side-tables.
All became shadow and burning aquarium. In the morning,
- quarrelsome June dawn, - I ran toward the fields, a donkey,
braying and brandishing my grief, until the Sabine women of
the quarter threw themselves at my breast.

- Arthur Rimbaud

And an example of a text using the imagery could be:
"Standing in my room I listen, and when I close my eyes I hear the beating of wings. Next, I always try to imagine the creature in my head, and somewhere a gray-blue bird unfolds it wings. It has just awakened from a great, long slumber and when it rises from that dark recess somewhere in my head it is as if it would shake itself from a veil of dreams."

Your feedback will be used to evaluate the exercise and subsequently presented in an essay as well as at a workshop related to the course I'm taking for literature promotion. Hope you have the time to participate, and if anything isn't clear or doesn't make sense then let me know. Thanks in advance for your help!
