See now, this actually suits the guy on the right. It's amazing what an average physique with decent pecs can do to how clothes fit you.

Meanwhile, the guy on the left is how I imagine 4chan and /lit/ wearing this jumper. Shitty physique, pretty ugly, etc.

I'm looking to read what would be considered the most essential, influential works of Eastern/non-Western literature. A broad category, but y'know: Chinese, Indian, Middle-Eastern, etc.

All of the reading lists I've found have been lackluster, though. Either they're too expansive or inconsistent. I tried searching the archive and wiki, but didn't find much. I've slowly compiled my own list over the past couple of weeks, but it's still a work in progress.

Settle down anons and let me tell you a story.

This story takes place in ancient China during the period of the warring States.

There once was a wise old man. This man lived on a farm with his son. The farm they ran was famous for rearing horses.

One day one of the man's best horses ran away. The people in the neighboring village heard of this travesty and went go comfort the old man.

"What awful terrible luck!" They said.

The wise old man, wearing a mild expression, replied, "Maybe."

The villagers headed back to their village, confused as to why the man was not upset.

The next day, the horse returned, bringing with it a herd of wild horses. When the people in the neighboring village heard of this they came rushing back to the old man's house.

"What great luck you have!" They cheered.

The man, still holding a passive smile replied, "Maybe."

>implying anyone cares about the law, it's a fucking war
Not before it's been declared, it isn't. You seem to be missing my point entirely.
>implying america has declared any of its wars
No wars we've fought since we pulled out of Korea have been legal by any meaningful standard even by our own laws, but we fought WWII quite legally, and WWI, too. The Gulf of Tonkin resolution was predicated upon a CIA hoax that took American lives.

In the South be drooping trees,
long the bough, thick the vine,
Take thy delight,
my prince, in happy ease.

In the South be drooping boughs
the wild vine covers,
that hold delight, delight, good sir,
for eager lovers.

Close as the vine clamps the trees
so complete is happiness,
Good sir, delight, delight, in ease,
In the South be drooping trees.

>To conclude, The Light of humane minds is Perspicuous Words, but by exact definitions first snuffed, and purged from ambiguity; Reason is the Pace; Encrease of Science, the way; and the Benefit of Man-kind, the end.
>And on the contrary, Metaphors, and senseless and ambiguous words, are like ignes fatui; and reasoning upon them, is wandering amongst innumerable absurdities; and their end, contention, and sedition, or contempt.
Is Hobbes right? Is it absurd to reason with metaphors? If so, why do you reason with metaphors, /lit/?

Who, in your opinion, is absolutely the greatest philosopher of all time? Also, explain why, because I am new to philosophy and would like to get into reading philosophy but don't know who to read to REALLY grasp philosophy(if that makes any sense).

People do not want to read Confucius because he reminds us of the value of loyalty, dedication and hard work.

Instead people want to read Lao Tzu because he inspires laziness and his philosophy is that it is okay to be a do-nothing who contributes nothing to society.

Wake the fuck up. The superior Chinese philosopher is not the one whose words you would rather hear.
